About Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church

One of the most important things to know about Zion is that we are a Bible believing confessional Lutheran Church. We believe in all the miracles of the Bible as written in the Holy Scriptures.

We Believe The Bible is without Error

What that means is that we acknowledge and accept all the canonical books of the Old and New Testaments as the revealed Word of God, verbally inspired, and acknowledge and accept all the Confessional writings of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, contained in the Book of Concord of the year 1580, to be the true and genuine exposition of the doctrines of the Bible.

These Confessional Writings are the three Ecumenical Creeds (Apostles’, Nicene, and Athanasian), the Unaltered Augsburg Confession, the Smalcald Articles, Luther’s Large and Small Catechisms, and the Formula of Concord.

The following is some other general information about Zion.

Synod Affiliation

Zion is a member congregation of the Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS). All our Congregations hold to the same confessional beliefs. See this link for the ELS and our specific beliefs.

Because there are a number of Lutheran Synods around today, this can be confusing. We are not a member church of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church of America). The ELS was established in 1850 as the “Norwegian Synod.” Our headquarters is located in Mankato, MN on the site of our Bethany Lutheran College and Bethany Lutheran Seminary.

Our Synod has been characterized through the years by it’s warm evangelical spirit and it’s uncompromising faithfulness to the historic Lutheran faith. Our Synod has not joined with the Lutheran mergers of years past through which much of the heart of the Lutheran faith has now been lost.

The ELS is comprised of over one hundred congregations. It is opening new mission congregations each year and carries on foreign mission work in Peru, South America. Our Synod enjoys cordial fellowship with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS). Together we are committed to sharing the Good News of our redemption through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior.
