Advent

Advent is the beginning of the Church year and, like Lent, it is a time of repentance. During Advent we prepare for the coming of Christ as the baby in Bethlehem, in His Word and Sacraments, and in the Day of Judgment when he will rescue us from this fallen world.

Advent Wreath Candles

There are 5 candles typically present on an advent wreath. Did you ever wonder what they stood for and why the colors sometimes vary between what you see on one advent wreath versus another? Hopefully this short explanation will help answer some of those questions.

Prophecy Candle The Prophecy Candle reminds us that Christ's coming was prophesied long long ago. This candle is purple.
Bethlehem Candle The Bethlehem Candle marks His humiliation in setting aside the use of His divine powers to live among us as a true man. This candle is purple.
Angels' Candle The Angels' Candle reminds us that Jesus will return in glory accompanied by His angels. This candle is purple.
Shepherds' Candle The Shepherds' Candle reminds us that it is the Gospel that creates faith in our hearts. This candle is typically pink, but sometimes purple is used when pink is not available.
Christ Candle The Christ Candle reminds us that Jesus is the light of the world. This candle is white signifying the purity of Jesus.

We hope this brief explanation of the candles helps you with your study and learning.
